A Post As Random As My Thoughts Today
I took the kids to see Karate Kid today.
Sadly, Ralph Macchio was not in it. As someone old enough to have seen the original in theaters though I still loved this new version. It was long, but not so you'd notice and the kids had a great time. A few notes though:
1) It's very, very violent. Which, duh, it's a marital arts movie but I was surprised by the amount.
2) A couple of bad words. A** and D*** I believe.
3) A lot of the movie is in subtitles which is something to consider if you're bringing kids who don't have strong reading skills. In that case you're going to have to explain a lot. Probably to the annoyance of the people around you.
4) The two main kids who say out loud that they are 12, kiss. Ew.
The overall message of honor and respect are good and there's a lot of emphasis on how hard work pays off.

Next up: recipe help. The Raspberry Almond Bars were a hit on Sunday. A hit with the three people who ate them that is. Everyone else was on a diet of some sort.
Which means there were too many leftover and I have been eating more than the RDA.
Darn.
So this week I'm going to put out some fresh fruit in lieu of dessert. A big plate of fresh strawberries and bananas.
With a bowl of Nutella in the middle.
I try to respect the good choices and the bad, both.
But where I need help is with an appetizer type thing to serve. The first week I did tortilla pinwheels and this week I served hummus with veggies and pita chips.
Thoughts?
Links?
Thanks.

And I feel like I misled y'all yesterday. That little talk about the goose and the hummingbird was NOT off the cuff. Two days of thought and prayer went into that sucker. Off the cuff lectures involve me saying things like:
"Were you born in a barn?!"
"Am I speaking Chinese? How do you not understand this?"
and the classic
"Because I said so!"
Just thought you should know.

What - why wouldn't they eat raspberry bars? Raspberries are fruits.
Silly guests.
I had never even heard of Nutella before I met Christine in my sheltered vanilla world. Its some good stuff. I haven't had any since college.... maybe I will introduce me kids to it....
I too want to see Karate Kid, but that fact that 12 year olds kiss is annoying.... doesn't Hollywood even see a little wrong in this?
I just discovered Nutella last year - major yumminess.
Check out Ralph Macchio's new movie. The new Karate Kid has nothing on this

Not sure why but my e-mail address connected to the last comment was a little wonky apparently...I think it is fixed now!
And I would gladly eat some of the leftover bars... :)
I like to make mexican corn dip. Make sure the corn is well drained. I serve it best with tostitos scoops. YUMMO.
I have a recipe that I would always make Jeff take to work because his dept was 80% women and it just didn't work for him to take chips and store bought cookies like when he work with mostly men. WIth a double batch he came home with an empty bowl every time.
It is a fruit salsa with toasted homemade tortilla chips. It is a complete rip off of a Pampered Chef recipe, but my mom and I don't add all the extra sugar and jelly that the original recipe calls for. So its very healthy except for a little cinnamon sugar to season the tortilla chips. It is kind of long so I'll email it to you in a doc tomorrow.
Nutellaaaa YUMMMMMMMYYY!
I don't think Karate Kids is my movie...
We saw it too and I totally agree on the romance aspect, I wish they would have just left that out. On a snippet with the director, he said that he and Will Smith were both in agreement on making the fights REAL fights on an adult level, so I was prepared for that. But still, the sound of impact was jarring. You are a good mom to explain to your kids during the movie. My poor Sawyer just had to wonder. But I did tell him after. It's been three days and they are still practicing their kung fu moves.
Just so you know, you crack me up. I feel like we live in the same house sometimes.
I know of a great dessert recipe for all your dieters and even the people who are not dieting will enjoy it! It is an ice cream bar cake. Let me know if you want the recipe! (and yes, it actually is low fat!)
As for an appetizer that is healthy look on epicurious.com for ideas... I love that website. I'm sure PW also has something yummy as well (just watch out for the butter)
SUPER easy, SUPER yummy, diet...ok.

Nutella? Fruit? There's better desserts than that? Really? I could live off of just berries and nutella. That is if I had the money for tons of berries.
"Off the cuff lectures involve me saying things like:
"Were you born in a barn?!"
"Am I speaking Chinese? How do you not understand this?""
I love when you speak off the cuff. Or at least blog off the cuff. Seriously that stuff cracks me up (but your speech about the birds was GOLDEN. Five points for that one.)
Fun Fact: I have never tried Nutella.
Can you bring a healthy dessert if so here you go:

I know I sound like an old prude, but when did 12 year olds start kissing?!
I'm pondering on taking the older two to the Karate Kid, however, I think they need to see the original version before I do. I tried checking it out yesterday at Redbox, but it was gone. I did see It's Complicated from Redbox for myself (not the kids) and it is cute. I'd recommend it for a buck.
Did you also know that I'm now addicted to Nutella? I'm considering a Nutella diet and seeing if it works. I think it will. Don't ya think?
First of all you can never go wrong with nutella.
Here is an easy recipe that people ask me for every single time I serve it...it tastes like much more than it is:
I make mine in a quiche dish because it's pretty. Anything roughly that size is fine-
spread one package cream cheese (you can use the low fat) in the dish
on top of that spread a layer of pesto (one small jar)
next layer one small jar of drained and chopped sun dried tomatoes
finally top with toasted pine nuts.
Serve with crackers, pita, and/or veggies. It is yummy!
