    Concessions

Due to my tenuous emotional state, I pretty much gave myself a pass all last school year from parent volunteering.  This year I don’t really have an excuse so when an email came out advertising an “urgent” need for parents to staff a concession stand at the UNL Football game for Saturday, I signed us up.

I figure this counts as parent volunteerism for both Hayden and Reagan.  UNL has a deal worked out with charities throughout the city.  The charity provides workers for home games and the university makes a donation to the charity.  It costs the university a lot less than it would to hire real workers and the charity makes about $300/game.

    Win-win.

When I signed up, I pictured us climbing up and down the stands throwing hot dogs at people and I was dreading it, so I was quite pleased when we arrived and discovered that not only were we at an inside stand, but that it was in the box seats.

This was our view (well, Rich’s view since he was behind me manning the pop machine) and it’s just really too bad that I don’t care about football, because it was a really good view.  Of course, if I cared about the game, I might have been upset that I couldn’t appreciate that view whilst doling out hotdogs, Runzas and gigantic cups of pop so maybe it’s for the best.

Fun story for Nebraska fans:  Before the game started as people were just starting to trickle in, a couple came up to the booth to order some food.  I gave them their food, handed them their change and encouraged them to enjoy the game.  Then I turned around to find Rich staring at me incredulously.

“What?” I asked.  His eyes bulged.

    “That was Eric Crouch.”

    “Oh?  Was it?”

    “Heisman trophy winner Eric Crouch!”

“Mmmm-hmmmm” and then I leaned in and whispered, “I don’t really care.

It’s not that I don’t like football.  It’s fine.  I just don’t care about it.

    I know.

    I’m a heathen.

But I am a heathen whose weekly emotional state is not determined by the performance of 18-22 year old boys playing a game on plastic grass.

    I’m pretty comfortable with that.

Love it! I feel you on the football thing; I was once a fan but lately can't seem to bring myself to care about rich men throwing a ball down a field (I live in NFL-rooting territory, not so much NCAA)
When I swam in college, the swim team would work concessions at a few of the home football games as a fundraiser (Div II school, so only athletic money was for football team, the rest of us had to raise our own!) It actually ended up being one of my favorite things to do. Something about the fast paced environment and working with your team mates (not to mention standing in the nice warm concession stand and selling hot chocolate when it was freezing cold outside!)

Ha! I totally get it. I not care about football either. I regularly try to make plans with friends, Or my husband only to be told no, don't you realize the broncos are on at that time? Ummm, no, I do not really pay attention or care.

I was reading the first comment nodding my head right along, and then I realized my sister wrote it ;) Hi Jordan!

Nice post Mindy :) I go in and out of being into football, this year I am out as I have 2 young kids (2mo and 2yo) and I choose sleep over watching football.

I looooooove Nebraska football, but I work hard to not let it affect my emotions, and it usually doesn't. AND I love your description of it: "the performance of 18-22 year old boys playing a game on plastic grass." LOL

I have tried and tried, but I cannot understand the game.
